Free domains are available to South Africa via ZANiC, to register a domain with them you will need to be in South Africa or have a South African presence for your organization. Valid South African contact details are required when registering a free domain.

ZANiC offers two domains for free registration and you are able to choose between za.net and za.org domains when registering your free domain provided of course that they are not already in use.

ZANiC operates very much like a traditional registrar and the process is very much manual, however for South Africans who are accustomed to dealing for uniform for domain registrations the manual system will not be surprising or complicated.

Domains are not instant and it takes several weeks for domains to be approved however given the fantastic service in all regards it is well worth the wait and considering it is done completely not for profit we are more than happy to wait. There are no paid for models with ZANiC at all and the service is 100% free with no restrictions at all besides those you would expect to see with a regular domain registrar.

A word of warning however when registering your domain make sure that the e-mail address you use will be accessible in future, although ZANiC provides a solution to reclaim domains and can handle disputes the process is manual and could result in delays if you require urgent changes to your free domain.

Remember that you will need a valid South African address and a non-free e-mail address to register your free domain with ZANiC.
